“I'm ecstatic to have the privilege of receiving the All-Conference and All-American awards, and thrilled that Lake Forest lacrosse has once again been recognized. As a member of the Forester Lacrosse team, I'm honored to be playing with so many talented and motivated ladies who inspire me to become the best goalie possible. I don't believe these awards would have been given however if it wasn't for the hard work of Coach Shaw and Coach Cat, who have put in hours of dedication for the love of the team. I look forward to another great season next spring, where I hope we'll win the WCLL and continue on to Nationals!”
Coach Catanzaro on Wye:
“Babs, improved significantly from her freshman year to this year. She worked extremely hard in the off-season, and I couldn’t be more proud to see her efforts rewarded by the WCLA. Our defense as a team this year improved significantly, and Babs’ leadership from the crease is one of the main reasons why. Babs is everything we hope to see in our student-athletes, and she is a dedicated Forester who we should all share in praising for this honor.”
Wye becomes the second Forester to be named to the All-American team, joining defender CC Hayne ’11 in this distinguished club. Link to LAX MAGAZINE article

Foresters Complete Season at WCLL Tournament

The Lake Forest Women's Lacrosse team finished their season on Saturday at their first ever WCLL Conference Tournament, held at Ohio State University. The Foresters would enter the tournament as the #5 seed, and take on the Butler University Bulldogs from Indiana, who were the #4 seed, in the quarterfinals. In a day that was marred with temperatures in the 30's and a constant rain, it was the Foresters who would heat up the field early in the game. The Foresters would jump out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by sophomores Danielle Leonardo and Emily White. White's goal would come on her first free position shot of the game. Sensational goalie "Babs" Wye, would stop three consecutive shots to open the game, including two free position shots, before allowing a third free position to go past her to cut the lead 2-1. The Foresters would quickly respond as Erin Shamley would control the next draw, and take the ball down the sideline before finding an open Caitlin Connors for a quick score in front of the nets. White would score her second goal to bump the Forester lead to 4-1.
"I was excited with the way that we started the game. We were hitting on all cylinders and winning every ground ball. That was the type of effort that we expect, and I was excited to see our girls start off like that, especially after a long van ride the day before," commented Coach Catanzaro.
Butler would record their second goal on the next possession, but once again, the Foresters would answer with their fifth goal of the day, this time by Amelia Lawrence on a nifty dodge between two Bulldog defenders. The Foresters would sputter out on draw control, and Butler would cut the lead to 5-3. On the ensuing possession, the Bulldogs would be awarded a free position shot, and their conversion would make the score 5-4. The Foresters would call a timeout, regroup, have a few substitutions as they retook the field.
"I felt like we got a little overconfident. We had come off the Kalamazoo win, where we had just run away from them early, and I was afraid that there was a little bit of a hangover effect from that game. As the game got cut to 5-4, you could see a look of surprise from some of our girls. I had to remind them that this is a tournament of the leagues best, and that we are a 10 win team. Our confidence needed to stay up," said Catanzaro.
Coming out of the timeout, Sarah Milligan took the ball of a quick feed from Lindsey Jewett, who was stationed behind the net, and score her first goal of the day. Lawrence would close out the first half scoring by giving the Foresters a 7-4 lead going into intermission. The Foresters took the field in the second half with tremendous energy, and would tally the first three goals of the second half in a span of 2 minutes and 30 seconds, all of which came from team captain Emily White. White would score on a Free Position to grow the lead to 8-4, and would follow that goal up with a right handed scoop shot past the Bulldog goalie. Her 5th goal of the game would come on a feed from Lawrence and gave the Foresters a 10-4 lead. Butler would call a timeout. Out of the timeout, Butler would record four straight goals, two of which would come off of Forester turnovers. With the score 10-8, and 17 minutes remaining in the game, Coach Catanzaro would call a timeout.
"We stopped winning the 50-50 balls. I wanted to make sure that we were focused on that small component. I knew that if we had possession, we would win the game, but we weren't creating those extra possessions," Catanzaro commented.
The Foresters came out of the time out, and scored an immediate goal, on a Free Position by Amelia Lawrence. Up 11-8, the Foresters looked to take permanent control. On the next draw control, Erin Shamley, took the ball behind the Bulldog net. For the next six minutes and twenty-two seconds, the Foresters maintained possession without taking a shot on goal.
"We were being very active on top of the 12m, and they would not chase our players with the ball behind the net. We had the lead, so there was no reason to force the issue, when Lindsey popped open, it was an easy goal for her." said Catanzaro, referring to freshman Lindsey Jewett recording the Foresters 12th and final goal.
The Foresters would close out the game possessing the ball for the final three minutes, despite tremendous pressure from a trapping Butler defense to secure a birth in the conference semi-finals. Defensively, the Foresters were lead by Jenn Caldwell who recorded give caused turnovers, while Sarah Jonathan scooped up five ground balls. Leonardo played her best game of the season, recording three ground balls, four caused turnovers, and a draw control to go along with her goal. White's five goals gave her 28 on the season. Wye finished the game with 12 saves.

Foresters Claim Northwest Division Title

Emily White's Eight Point Performance Propels Foresters Past DePaul!

The Lake Forest College Lacrosse team found themselves in a nip and tuck battle with a team they had defeated just five days prior when they hosted the DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday afternoon at Farwell Field.

The Foresters would jump out to an early 4-1 lead over DePaul as Emily White would score the first two goals for Lake Forest sandwiched around DePaul's first goal. Freshman Lindsey Jewett would score her first goal of the game to help extend the Forester lead to three. Team captain Sarah Jonathan would convert a Free Position opportunity after making a long run with possession from her defender position. It was Sarah's first goal since moving from midfield to the defense mid-season.

DePaul would begin to push back against the Foresters as they would convert a free position opportunity, and then take a draw control down field quickly to cut the lead to 4-3.

White would score her third goal of the first fifteen minutes of the game before Amelia Lawrence would give the black and red a 6-3 lead after a pass from White lead to a quick strike goal. DePaul would rally and tally their fourth goal of the half, cutting the lead to 6-4. On the next draw, Jewett would score her second goal of the half, with White assisting once again. DePaul would score their fifth goal of the day before White would close out the first half scoring with her fourth goal of the morning. The goal would give White her sixth point of the first half.

In a play that appeared to be a continuation of the first half, Lawrence would score her second goal of the game on an assist from White. The Blue Demons would go on a four goal run during the first 11 minutes to tie the game at 9-9. DePaul would take their first lead of the game at 10-9, before Caitlin Connors would tally her first goal of the game on a fantastic pass from freshman Laura Reckdenwald to make the game 10-10. The Blue Demons would score the next two goals as they controlled consecutive draw controls to take a 12-10 lead with 11:12 remaining.

A time out by Coach Catanzaro, would be followed by the Foresters score from Emily White who made an impressive dodge to the crease before defeating the DePaul goalie.

Sarah Milligan, the teams leading scorer coming into the game, would convert her first goal of the game to tie the game 12-12 at the 4:14 mark of the game.

As has been the story for the Foresters all season, they received a huge spark off the bench. Today would not be any different. Freshman Marissa Weber would scoop up the ensuing draw control and carry it deep into the Foresters offensive end. Weber would get the ball to Caitlin Connors who would roll the crease, but would misfire into the side of the net. Weber and Connors would both pursue the errant shot, and Connors would gain control. She would take another charge at the goal, but a DePaul foul would be called. Connors would take the ball behind the net, and set up what looked like another roll of the crease. As the Blue Demon defense slid to help, Jewett would move into an open spot in front of the net. Connors would pass the ball, and Jewett would not hesitate on the shot as she put the ball past the DePaul goalie.

Jewett would record her second hat trick of her freshman campaign, and her second against DePaul in as many games. In addition, Jewett recorded four draw controls on the day to lead the Foresters.

Defensively, the Foresters were paced by Maeve Connelley who recorded five caused turnovers and five ground ball pickups. Lawrence would have another three point game with two goals and an assist. She also recorded five ground ball pickups and three draw controls. Sophomore Amanda Forsyth was second on the team with three caused turnovers, providing the Foresters with some crucial extra possessions in the second half.

Sophomore goalie Barbara Wye had a difficult game in goal as she was peppered with 24 shots, of which she saved 12. Most impressively, Wye stopped four of the six Free Position Shots that she faced.

"I am thrilled with our girls and the way that they performed in this game. This was the biggest challenge that we have faced since our St. Mary's game, and it was good to see us make the necessary plays to win the game. In two years, we have had a lot of success, but this game meant a lot to our team. To win the division outright, and not experience a loss in our division was a great accomplishment. Our girls made a strong commitment early in the season, and they have been able to take the coaching, and continue to improve as a team. I am looking forward to seeing how we stack up as we move onto the WCLL Tournament at Ohio State next week," said Head Coach Jim Catanzaro.

Foresters defeat pesky Maroons

FORESTERS START FAST AND FINISH STRONG!

LFC started off strong against the University of Chicago on Saturday, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on goals by Emily White, Amelia Lawrence, and back to back goals by Caitlin Connors. After a response goal by the Maroons, the Foresters would score two additional goals to take a 6-1 lead as Brittany Rattinger would score goal number five, before Sarah Milligan would score the Foresters sixth goal.

The Maroons would call a time out, and through a change in their draw strategy would maintain the next four possessions and score goals on each of them to cut the score to 6-5. The Foresters would realign their defense and close out the half on a three goal scoring barrage.

Sophomore goalie Barbara Wye was outstanding in goal in the first half as she would make fifteen saves while giving up just five goals.

In the second half, the Foresters would pick up where they left off extending their lead to 13-5 on goals by Amanda Forsyth, Lindsey Jewett, Caitlin Connors and Laura Reckdenwald, before the Maroons would score their first goal of the second half. With a seven goal lead, the Foresters pushed forward to a 16-6 lead before the Maroons would close out the scoring for the day against the Forester reserves for a final of 16-9.

Wye would finish the day with 24 total saves on the day, her season high. The Foresters would control the draw circle winning 14 of the 27 draws, freshman Lindsey Jewett continues to pace the Foresters in this category as she had seven controls in the game. Milligan and Connors both recorded hat tricks for the Foresters, while Jewett, Lawrence, and White had two goals a piece. The Foresters demonstrated better passing in their offensive end and in transition, leading to a season high 8 assists. Forsyth and Lawrence each recorded two assists on the day from their midfield position.

An aggressive Forester defense was paced by Lawrence and Erin Shamley who both created six turnovers, while Emily White and Sarah Milligan caused five and four respectively from their attack positions. Forsyth paced the ground ball patrol with six pick ups, while Sarah Jonathan, Shamley, and Milligan each picked up five ground balls.

The Foresters improved to 8-1 overall on the season 6-1 in WCLL League play. The Foresters close out their regular season tomorrow against DePaul (2pm) and Kalamazoo (3:30pm) at Farwell Field. A victory over DePaul would guarantee the Foresters a birth in the WCLL playoffs in Columbus, Ohio next weekend.

Foresters Defeat DePaul after a Slow Start

Lake Forest started out uncharacteristically slow yesterday in their game against Depaul University. The Demons would come out "swinging" and take control of the game early. The Foresters played uncharacteristically passive on the draw circle, and a few early possessions lead to a 3-0 deficit for the Foresters.

After a Forester timeout, sophomore captain Emily White would generate the Foresters first scoring opportunity. White would score her second goal less than two minutes later to cut the Blue Demon lead to a single goal. The Blue Demons answered the Foresters’ charge with another goal, before freshman Lindsey Jewett, found the back of the net with a hard shot from the top of the eight meter. On the following draw, the Foresters took possession on a Depaul penalty. The Foresters would settle down and circle the ball around the offensive end, before White would score her third goal of the game off a pass from sophomore captain Amelia Lawrence. On the next draw, Lawrence would take possession and roll the crease to tie the game with 58 seconds left in the half. A wayward draw would end up in the possession of the Blue Demons who would fast break to the Forester goal and score with a mere three seconds remaining in the first half.

At half time, Coach Catanzaro made a few line up changes, including inserting first year player Torey Crown into the starting line up. Coach Cat's decision would be quickly rewarded as Crown would scoop up the initial draw control of the second half, and take the ball immediately to goal for a score.

"Torey is a bit raw in her lacrosse skills, but she is as hard nosed a player as we have on our team. I knew that her aggressiveness could be a success or a fail, and fortunately, it was a great success. Her play inspired her teammates. I hope that she can keep that up going forward," commented Coach Catanzaro.

The Blue Demons would reclaim the lead on a double move to the goal. The seventh goal by Depaul would lead Junior Captain Sarah Milligan to take the game into her own hands literally for the next six minutes of the game as she would score four goals in a row. Two of Milligan's goals came off of assists from Lawrence. However, it was her fourth goal that showed a true grit, as she came through a "quadruple team." Though she admittedly missed two open defenders, the end result was undeniable. Depaul would sneak a goal in between Milligan's second and third goals, the Foresters would come out of the six minute spurt with a 10-8 lead.

"Sarah took over the game for a period. I could not have been more impressed with what she did in that time period. It wasn't pretty lacrosse, but it was effective lacrosse. When a team is struggling, that is sometimes what a captain needs to do in order to get the team moving in the right direction," commented Catanzaro.

A new defensive alignment for the Foresters would generate an impressive second half as significant plays by sophomore captain Sarah Jonathon, sophomore rookie Jackie Friedrich, freshman Erin Shamley, sophomore Maeve Connelly were joined by freshman Marissa Weber led to a stand-still on the Guest section of the scoreboard. Connelly controlled the groundball game for Lake Forest, leading the team with four pickups.

Lake Forest went on to score five more goals before the game ended. Jewett scored off a free position with ease, before junior Caitlin Connors would win the draw, carrying the ball, and scoring on a fast break. Vermont-native Danielle Leonardo scored the next goal on a settled attack before she positioned herself to snipe the top corner of the net. The Foresters would set up their next possession behind the net before Lawrence connected with streaking Connors who finished with another goal for the Foresters. The Foresters would tally one final goal as Jewett would receive a pass from White before putting the ball past the Blue Demon goalie.

The Foresters would be lead in caused turnovers by Emily White with four, while Jewett would pace the Foresters with three draw controls. On the day the Foresters would possess 13 of the 25 draws on the day, their lowest percentage of the season.

Lake Forest returns to action against the University of Chicago at 4pm on Saturday at Farwell Field.

Mid-game Goal Spurt, Spawns Victory over Northwestern

Lake Forest College started off their game against Northwestern this Thursday slowly, but kicked off a 10-0 spurt to put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.

The Foresters trotted out a new look line up for the third straight game as captain midfielder Sarah Jonathan moved back to shore up the Forester defense. The Foresters for the second game in a row saw freshman Lindsey Jewett line up at the center position. The Foresters demonstrated great draw control with the Colorado native Jewett commanding the draw. Jewett would record seven draw controls, and freshman Erin Shamley would record five during the contest. In all, the Foresters would secure 21 of the 30 draws during the course of the game.

The Foresters would jump out to an early lead as Jewett would score the opening goal on an assist from sophomore Amelia Lawrence from behind the net. The Wildcats would counter with two consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead. This would ignite a Forester push that would score three consecutive goals. Caitlin Connors who made her first start of the 2012 season would tie the game at two a piece as Emily White found her cutting across the fan. Lawrence would control the following draw, and take the ball directly to goal, splitting defenders with a speed burst from about 18 meters out before defeating the helpless Northwestern goalie. Finally, Sarah Milligan would receive a pass from Laura Reckdenwald to give the Foresters a two goal lead at 4-2. Northwestern, who had three individuals who had previously played on their national championship varsity program, scored the next two goals to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore goalie Barbara Wye deflected several shots before giving up the third goal for the Wildcats.

The Foresters would take off from there. Scoring the next 10 goals of the game to close out the first half and begin the second half. Many of these goals were the direct result of the stingy draw control exhibited by the Foresters.

"We had so many extra possessions because of the work our mid-fielders were doing around the circle. I was thoroughly impressed with the way we played. At one point, they changed who was taking the draw for them, and we were still able to make the necessary adjustments to secure the ball, I could not have been more pleased," said Coach Jim Catanzaro.

"Sarah Milligan was really a key to the onslaught of goals. She had a stretch of play that really took over the game. I have been waiting for this opportunity of her. We have been in some blowout games, and her minutes of been down because of that. Having the opportunity to see her play the majority of the sixty minutes was truly special. Sometimes we forget just how talented of a player she is," praised Catanzaro.

Milligan would score four of the next ten goals, giving her five on the day. Shamley would add two goals, while Jewett, White, Levine, and finally Connors would extedn the Forester lead to 14-4 with 13 minutes to go in the game.

A Northwestern time out after the 12th goal, did not stop the Foresters, but two key injuries did. Sophomore Amelia Lawrence and Sophomore Jackie Friedrich both went out of the game midway through the second half, and neither would return. The Foresters were already without starting defensive player Stacy Dierking on the day.

"These two individuals are keys to our success defensively. They play great on ball defense, and Amelia is particularly valuable in transition because of her speed," noted Catanzaro. "We put out a few lineup groups that were not necessarily comfortable with one another, and as a coach, I did a poor job of adjusting. I felt that we had a pretty sizable lead and that we would be able to weather any storm that they presented."

The Wildcats would begin a push to cut into the Foresters lead. In the final 10 minutes of the game, the Wildcats would receive seven free position shots, and they would convert on six of them. In all, the Wildcats would score seven goals to the Foresters three in the final ten minutes. The Foresters would receive goals from Connors, her third of the game, White, and Levine, to create a final tally of 17-11.

Wye would finish the day with 17 saves on the day, despite giving up a season high 11 goals. Of the 11 goals, seven were scored on free positions. Wye also made four saves on free position shots.

Erin Shamley and freshman Sandy Fredericks paced the Foresters in ground ball pickups with six and four. The victory was especially sweet for Fredericks who won bragging rights in her family by beating her father's alma mater.

"It was a great win against a Division I member of the WCLL. We will need to improve our defensive effort significantly. We can not commit that many fouls inside the 8 (meter), and leave our goalie in a vulnerable position. I am excited to have a weekend for us to get better, and I am hopeful that our girls will take advantage of this time. We have a tough stretch of important games over the next week, that will determine our fate for the conference tournament in Ohio," concluded Catanzaro.

The Foresters return to action on Tuesday as they entertain WCLL Northwest opponent DePaul University at 5:15pm on Farwell Field. The game time is a switch from the original schedule.

LFC ROCKS RAMBLERS!

Sarah Milligan scored the Foresters first goal 26 seconds into the Friday afternoon game, and the Foresters did not look back from there on their way to a 17-2 victory over Northwest Divisional opponent Loyola University.

The Foresters installed a different lineup for the game, that saw freshman Lindsey Jewett taking the draws for the Foresters, and freshman Erin Shamley moving into the starting line up in the midfield. Both moves proved to be fruitful for the Foresters as they controlled 21 of the 22 draws on the afternoon. Jewett personally secured and astounding 11 draws, while Shamley recorded three.

Taking advantage of the possession advantages, the Foresters jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Ramblers would generate their first shot of the game with 3 minutes to go in the first half. Only one other time during the first 25 minutes of the game did Loyola get the ball inside the Foresters 12M arc.

The Foresters closed the first half with a 12-1 lead. The second half would start as the first half went with the Foresters extending their lead to 16-1 before the Ramblers would garner their second and final goal. The Foresters would close out the scoring as senior Brittany Rattinger would score the final tally for the Foresters.

The Foresters received hat-tricks from Co-Captains Sarah Milligan and Emily White, while Amelia Lawrence and Jewett would record two goals for the Foresters. Sophomore Amanda Forsyth would sub into the game and record two goals as well, including a nifty "under the bridge" move between two Loyola defenders. Erin Shamley, Maddie Levine, Sarah Jonathan, and Caitlin Connors also added goals for the Foresters.

Lawrence and Forsyth would help pace the Forester defense with 5 and 4 caused turnovers respectively. The dynamic duo would also pace the Forester ground ball patrol with five pick ups each. The Foresters would create 22 turnovers, and secure 36 ground balls on the day.

Sophomore goalie Barbara Wye would face only seven total shots, as the Foresters would hold a 36-7 advantage in that category. Wye made 5 saves, including stopping all three free position shots that she faced.

The Foresters return to action on Thursday afternoon, when they entertain Northwestern University at 4:30pm at Farwell Field.

Foresters Roll Past Thunder 19-8

In the third game of the of the Marquette play day Lake Forest faced off against familiar foe Wheaton College. In 2011, the Thunder were the Foresters first game in the new era of lacrosse at Lake Forest. Coming off of a disappointing loss against St. Mary's, the Foresters were excited to get back on the field.

The game started quickly and positively for the Foresters, as Sophomore Amelia Lawrence won the opening draw control and finished the possession with a quick shot past the Wheaton goalie. Fellow attack wing, Danielle Leonardo, sniped the second goal shortly after, on an assist from Freshman Lindsay Jewett, giving the Foresters an early 2-0 lead.

Wheaton would record their first tally on the score board on a free position shot, to cut the Forester lead in half 2-1. Massachusetts native Emily White, who was playing in front of a large group of family and friends, took possession of the ball, and aggressively attacked the right side of the cage, before being picked up by a Thunder defender. After a roll dodge, and switching to her left hand, White slipped the ball past the goalie to the back of the net. Wheaton answered with another goal, to make it a one-point game, until Jewett contributed her second goal to the game after the next draw. Junior Sarah Milligan passed the ball from behind the net to Jewett as she streaked into the eight meter arc. Jewett quickly caught the ball and shot, all in one motion, scoring the next goal for the Foresters.

Wheaton would gain their greatest wave of momentum on the ensuing two possessions scoring two unanswered goals against the Foresters, leading to a time out by Coach Catanzaro at the 13:46 mark remaining in the first half.

"During the time out we realized that possession, patience, and poise were going to be key. The initial part of the game involved such frantic scoring, that we were caught off guard," said team co-captain Amelia Lawrence. "We knew that we could really extend the lead if we just took care of the ball."

Tied 4-4, Wheaton would score the first goal after the time out, only to ignite a Forester rally to close out the first half. The Foresters scored six unanswered goals to close out the first half, and take a 10-5 lead into halftime.

The fifth goal was scored by Milligan on a pass from Sophomore Sarah Jonathon. Freshman Erin Shamley received a pass from Milligan and pushed the ball into the goal on a nifty shovel shot. Lawrence and Shamley scored the seventh and eighth goals, respectively, off of free position shots, while Leonardo used her fancy footwork around the crease to score her second goal of the game. The final first half tally was scored by Freshman and Connecticut native Laura Reckdenwald off of a free position of a Thunder shooting space violation.

With a five goal lead, Coach Catanzaro decided to give goalie Barbara Wye the rest of the day off, and moved Junior Jenn Caldwell from her defensive post into goal. Caldwell, who split time with Wye in 2011 made the most of her time goal and recorded 8 second half saves. Wye finished the first half with 9 saves.

To open the second half, the Foresters controlled the draw, and took painstaking effort to execute their offensive set. Lawrence would eventually find Jonathan in front of the goal for quick score. The Foresters would record four more unanswered goals taking their streak to 11 unanswered goals, while extending their lead to 15-5.

The Foresters found success both in set plays and in transition. During a set piece, Shamley was able to find Milligan for an easy goal. Emily White drove to goal for her second of the game, much to the delight of the Massachusetts contingent on hand.

Freshman Torey Crown, new to the sport of lacrosse, scored her first goal of the season coming on a fantastic goal created by a high fake and low shot. Defensive star Maeve Connelly found the back of the net after drawing a foul inside the 8-meter.

Lawrence and Jonathon once again found goal scoring chemistry as Lawrence passed from behind the goal to Jonathon who beat her defender and shot in the upper corner of the net.

After Wheaton scored their first goal of the second half to cut the Forester lead to nine before Senior Maddie Levine answered with a hard shot past the goalie’s feet. Wheaton answered the goal to cut the score to 16-7. Wheaton would score again before freshman Shamley gained another free position opportunity and whipped the ball past the Thunder goalie. The velocity of the shot was so impressive, that there was silence from the bench, as the marveled at the shot she had made. Forester rookie Jackie Friedrich scored her first collegiate goal to end the scoring at 19-8.

The Foresters collected 17 ground balls, and created 13 turnovers. The Foresters outshot the Thunder 34-19.

Foresters fall to St. Mary's in Overtime!

In the second game of the Marquette play day, the Foresters played the Irish Belles, a combined team of students from both St. Mary's and Notre Dame. This would be an extremely evenly matched game that would not be in short supply of last second heroics.

St. Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead, and the Foresters, only to have the Foresters answer 25 seconds later with a goal from Sarah Milligan on a great feed from Sarah Jonathan. The Irish-Belles would establish a strong presence on draw controls throughout the game winning 15 of the 21 draws.

"We were fortunate that we received great goal play from Babs, especially in the first half. We couldn't seem to get off the circle and secure possession. We tried a few different alignments, and unfortunately, it seemed like every bouncing ball found its way into their cross," explained Coach Catanzaro.

Armed with a 2-1 lead and possession of the draw, St. Mary's would take three shots in succession that were turned away by Wye, before the Foresters would win an endline chase to regain possession. On the ensuing possession, Milligan would score her second goal after a nifty dodge from the top of the 12 meter line.

The Foresters would score the next two goals as Emily White and Amelia Lawrence would push the ball past the Irish-Belle goal keeper. St. Mary's would then close out the half with three unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead at half-time.

The second half would start out slowly as neither team could create scores from their possessions. The Foresters forced three turnovers in the first five minutes of the second half, but could not capitalize on any of their possessions. Finally, with 9:26 seconds gone by, the Foresters would record the first goal of the second half on a fast break by White. It would take the Irish-Belles only 27 seconds before they responded with a goal of their own.

Trailing 6-5 the Foresters looked for a spark. Lawrence would secure the next draw and pressure the St. Mary's defense with a fast cut through the 8-meter, before she was fouled by one of the Irish-Belles. Lawrence would convert the free position shot to tie the game. On the following draw, the Irish-Belles would have temporary possession before Lawrence would jar the ball loose on a perfectly executed stick check. Milligan would take the ball and charge St. Mary's goal before using a great shot fake to give the Foresters their first lead since 4-3, and 7-6 with 2:33 remaining in the game. The goal would be Milligan's third of the game, finalizing her first hat trick of the 2012 season.

The Foresters would gain possession of the final draw of regulation, and would attempt to run out the clock. Unfortunately, the Foresters turned the ball over with 15 seconds to go. The ball immediately went to the Irish-Belle Goalie who made a tremendous pass 3/4 of the way down field. The Foresters were unable to cut off the Irish Belle penetration, and St. Mary's tied the game at 7-7 with three seconds to go in regulation.

The Foresters entered their first overtime game in team history. The Irish-Belles, carried their momentum into overtime and scored two quick goals to start the overtime period giving St. Mary's a 9-7 lead going into the second overtime period. WCLA rules state that in overtimes, two, three minute periods will be played. The second three minutes would be a complete reversal from the first three minutes. The Foresters would score quickly as White would record her second hat-trick in as many games. Freshman Torey Crown would give the Foresters a boost off the bench scooping up two ground balls, and creating a turnover that would lead to a possession by Danielle Leonardo next to the top of the 8 meter line. As Leonardo went for a move to goal, she was knocked to the ground by an Irish-Belle. Needing a substitute for the injured Leonardo, Coach Catanzaro turned to freshman Lindsey Jewett.

"Lindsey had started the game for us at attack, but was having a rough go of it. I had no hesitation in putting her in to replace Danielle, even though this meant that she would be moving to the midfield for the remaining minutes of overtime," said Catanzaro.

The move proved to be perfect as Jewett would prepare for the free-position shot, and successfully convert the opportunity. The goal tied the game at 9-9 with under 45 seconds to go. After the ensuing draw, the Foresters would take possession, and charge the St. Mary's goal. However, a turnover by the Foresters, would give the Belle's possession. The Belle's would push forward on a break, and Lake Forest would be called for a shooting space violation from 17 meters away. The Belle's would be awarded a Free-Position shot at the 8m line with 5 seconds remaining. Goalie Barbara Wye would turn away the shot, but the rebound would end up in the cross of another Irish-Belle who would slip the ball past Wye with .02 seconds remaining on the clock, handing the Foresters their first defeat of the 2012 season.

"It was a hard fought game, and one that showed a lot of grit by our team. St. Mary's played a great game, and was able to put together great goals at the end of regulation and overtime to secure the win. We need to work on handling the end of game situations better. Considering how many draws we lost today, we should feel a bit fortunate that we were even in the game at the end," concluded Catanzaro.

Wye finished the game making 14 saves in the game. Emily White and Sarah Jonathan both recorded 5 ground ball pickups. Danielle Leonardo and Jenn Caldwell each recorded three caused turnovers, while Amelia Lawrence had two interceptions, and two draw controls on the day.

Foresters defeat WCLA Division I Golden Eagles to kickoff 2012!

Foresters Defeat Host Marquette at the Marquette Play Day!

The women’s lacrosse team travelled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a three-game play day at Marquette University. The Foresters would appear in the opening game of the play day against the Golden Eagles at 8:00 AM.

The Golden Eagles would jump out to a 2-0 lead after just 4 minutes of play. The quick two quick strikes would press the Foresters into action. The next draw was won Junior Sarah Milligan, who would win the draw and take the ball the length of the field for the Foresters first goal of 2012. Milligan has a knack for being the first Forester to score, she did so in five games in 2011.

The Foresters would tie the game at 2-2 on the next possession off a fast break. Sophomore Amelia Lawrence charged to front of the goal.Marquette answered the Forester surge, after a long possession scoring on Sophomore goalie Barbaro Wye.

Sophomore defensive wing Sarah Jonathon found the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3 for the Foresters. After Milligan won the next draw, a quick pass to the stick of Lawrence, gave her an opportunity to "roll the crease" for her second goal of the game and the Foresters took the lead again 4-3. The Foresters had a surge of momentum and Milligan’s would keep it going as she dunked the shot in a high right corner over the goalie’s head to give the Forester’s a two goal lead at 5-3. The Forester’s lost the next draw and would commit an illegal check inside the 8 meter, gave up a free position shot, which Marquette would convert.

The Foresters finally established a settled attack and capitalized off a poised pass from freshman Erin Shamley to Sophomore Emily White who found the back of the goal ending the first half with a score of 6-4.

"At half-time, we really focused on our positioning for draws, and communicating on defense. There were times, where we were playing very tentative in the half field set up. I wanted to see a greater sense of urgency by the midfielders in getting back on defense. I felt like we were outnumbered a few times, and it was a communication and hustle issue. We are a very deep team, and because of that, we should never be tired on the field," said Catanzaro.

The Foresters come out in attack mode to start the second half. After controlling the initial draw, Lawrence scored her third goal of the game after drawing a free position on a drive to goal. Lake Forest would continue to find their "flow" on the next possession. Milligan controlled the draw and quickly passed to a streaking Emily White, leading to a graceful. Freshman Lindsay Jewett would score her first collegiate goal an assist from Milligan who was standing behind the cage. Jewett's goal would put the Foresters up 9-5.

Marquette would final stop the Forester onslaught by winning the draw and charging the cage. A shooting space violation would provide the Golden Eagles with another free position shot conversion. Milligan controlled the nest draw and circled the goal before passing to Jonathon on a perfect cut to goal. The pass was on target, and Jonathon would pump fake before putting and shot past the Marquette goalie. The goal would be Jonathan's second goal of the game and Milligan’s third assist.

The Foresters attack began to wear down Marquette, with lengthy possessions. The Foresters were able to execute some set offensive plays with great effectiveness considering it was the first game of the season.

"I was impressed that we were able to run a few of our sets. Last season we had a hard time getting everyone on the same page, especially early in the season. I think that the great weather definitely benefited us. We were able to have a few whole team, practices on the turf. In 2011, we only had one outdoor practice before our first game due to the weather. This should allow us to really advance our schematic growth as the season progresses," said Catanzaro.

One of the set plays Catanzaro was speaking of, lead to White completing her hat trick of the day, making the score 11-6. Marquette continued to compete hard against the Foresters, and after a few changes of possession between the restraining lines, they were able to cut the lead to 11-7. A follow up goal would be their final on the day as they recorded another free possession goal against the Foresters. The Foresters would add an insurance goal from Sophomore Amanda Forsyth with four minutes to go in the game. Forsyth's goal came on a strong side arm shot just past the goalie's hip. The final tally gave the Foresters a 12-8 victory over the home team Golden Eagles.

Despite facing 12 free position shots, sophomore goalie Barbara Wye only let in 5, which made up more than half of Marquette’s total 8 goals. Wye was also a standout in the flow of the game recording a save percentage of .63% for the game.

Defensively Lawrence led the team in ground balls, while Milligan led in draw controls, contributing to three out of 13 won by Lake Forest. Great defensive plays were made on the field by returners Junior Jenn Caldwell, Sophomore Maeve Connelly and Sophomore Stacey Dierking. The Foresters forced 23 turnovers on the day, with Lawrence and Shamley each recording four.

"I was thoroughly impressed with our play. It was a great way to start the season with a new team. I continue to marvel at how young we are on our roster. We have only two seniors, and both of those ladies are in their first year with the program," concluded Catanzaro.

2012 Women's Lax Roster

Official Roster Announced!

The 2012 LFC Women's Lacrosse Team Roster Announced!

Team boasts players from 17 states!

Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Jim Catanzaro, announced his official roster for the 2012 season today. The Foresters enter their second year of competition and will again compete in the 186 member WCLA- Division II. Last season, the Foresters completed their inaugural campaign with a record of 10-2, while senior defender CC Hayne was named a 1st team All-American.

"I am thrilled with the makeup of our team. We have a tremendous group of athletes on this team. Last year we had to develop some athletes into lacrosse players. This season, we have an even stronger team in our stick skills and ability to run. Our team is showing signs of being a great transition team that can get out and run. I am excited to see how our current skills translate to the open field game. Last season we were much more geared to the "half field" game, and getting into set pieces. This year, I believe that our skills will continue to be displayed in the fast break game. I feel that we have gotten quicker on defense, and that is going to provide us some opportunities to do some different schemes that we weren't able to do a year ago," said Catanzaro.

The team has players from 17 different states, boasting 5 from Illinois, 4 from Michigan and Massachusetts, and 2 from California and Florida. "Our roster is representative of the diversity that Lake Forest College prides itself on," commented Catanzaro.

The team returns 14 members from the inaugural team, including the top six goal scorers from the 2011 season. In 2011, the Foresters were paced by Sophomore Emily White (24) and Junior Sarah Milligan (22) in the scoring department. The Foresters were lead in assists by sophomore Amelia Lawrence (10). Other leading scorers returning for the Foresters are Caitlin Connors (15), Lawrence (15), Sarah Jonathan (9), and Danielle Leonardo (9).

Returning midfielders Amanda Forsyth and Crystal Ramirez, along with returning attack Emily Hampden-Smith look to contribute more to the Foresters as they play their second year of lacrosse. In 2011, the trio contributed a combined 10 Goals, 4 assists, and 51 ground ball pickups as coming off the bench.

On the defensive end, the Foresters will have some holes to fill with the graduation of Hayne and Sam Herron. The Foresters will look to sophomore returners Maeve Connelly and Stacey Dierking to help fill those voids.

The two goalie tandem of Jen Caldwell and Barbara Wye both return to the Foresters. Both goalies notched over 50 saves in 2011 while sharing time between the pipes.

"The core returning group have really taken steps forward. I am excited about their leadership within our program, and have enjoyed watching the younger players learn from their example," said Catanzaro.

Newcomers to the Foresters include Senior Maddie Levine, who was studying abroad last spring. The Buffalo-native made a name for herself as a member of the LFC Men's Club team her first two years on campus, prior to the women's team beginning.

Newcomers Sandi Fredericks (Fr), Brittany Rattinger (Sr), and Sarah Gilbride (So) look to make an impact for the Foresters around the goal at attack. Colorado native Lindsey Jewett looks to help the Foresters as a midfielder. Freshmen Lily Mead looks to jump into the starting lineup on the defense with transfer Michelle Sheehan (Jr) and Jacquelyn Friedrich (So). Sophomores Chelsea Thompson and Klara Nissan join the team for the first time and look to make an impact as the season progresses.

The Foresters will gain a boost from the LFC Women's Hockey team when their season ends as Freshman Laura Reckdenwald, Torey Crown, Erin Shamley, and Marissa Weber transition from the ice to the turf at Farwell Field.

The Foresters kick off the 2012 season at the Marquette Play Day on March 24th.
